Artist Statement

Freedom54_Winterstone_290wAt the age of 4-1/2, I arrived in Toronto with my parents and twin brother from Brussels, Belgium. My parents ensured that I had exposure to the Art Gallery of Ontario and Museums at a very early age so I could continue to develop artistically. Since I was a child I have enjoyed drawing, painting, and a huge variety of crafts.

After attending the Ontario College of Art in 1965/6, I was fortunate to be awarded a 1st Year Student scholarship. I left shortly, thereafter, to marry my childhood sweetheart, Mike, and we have two grown daughters, Andrea and Lesley (married to Jonathan Greenwald – and the parents of our first grandson, Jacob). Between us we are the proud owners of 6 dogs of varying breeds, ages and sizes.

I joined the City Sculpture School and Studio (now the Al Green Sculpture Studio School) in 2001, enabling me to experiment with many new mediums, including Winterstone, HydroStone, and mold making.

I was fortunate to sculpt with Zimbabwe stone given to me by a wonderful African sculptor, Locardia Ndandarika, as well as soapstone.  Each piece of stone is unique.  I would handle the raw stone without a project in mind.  Eventually the stone would determine what my subject would be.  The beauty of soapstone is that the rich, true grains and colours are not obvious until the finished piece is sanded and polished.

In Thornbury, I met my neighbour, Willi Wildman.  She has helped me release my most recent passion - oil painting.  Thornbury, Clarksburg and Collingwood have been the inspiration of many of my recent paintings.  My paintings and sculptures are included in several collections in Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

Additionally, I have enjoyed improving my photography skills and creating jewellery.

Oil paintings currently on display at The Matilda Swanson Gallery, 185 Marsh Street, Clarksburg, Ontario
